Using KEY versus ID

I am editing forms right now and wanted to know what is the difference, purposes or advantages to using KEY over ID, example Entry KEY verus Entry ID

This comes from the custom display knowledge base page.
http://formidablepro.com/knowledgebase/display-your-form-data/

There are two shortcodes for each field in the selected form: id and key. The ID and Key work synonymously, although there are times one may be a better fit than the other. The field IDs will not change, and the field keys can be edited but can also be “locked” from editing on the “Formidable” -> “Settings” page. If you’re using WPMU, and copying your custom display settings to other blogs, you should use the field keys since that will be consistent, and the ids may not be. Any of these shortcodes are available for use in the Content box.

so i can edit then lock and preserve custom named field name....

thanks
