Prevent user from editing certain field value

Is it possible to “lock” a field shown on a form so that a user can see it, but can’t edit it? In the form I’m creating I have two “name” fields, one for first and one for last. I’d like for them to be able to change their last name, but not their first name. So could I lock down the first name field somehow?
